20 Years Later: Through the Lens

Over the past 20 years, the region formerly known as the Soviet Union has cultivated a diverse landscape of news organizations. Although the media in some countries still hasn’t made much progress since the Soviet Union’s rule, others are changing to allow greater freedom and legal protection. The Baltic states, which boast some of the highest press freedom rankings worldwide, contrast sharply with nations such as Turkmenistan, where there are accounts of journalists being brutally tortured and murdered by the government.
