Global Journalist

Faith in the media

William Lobdell, 47, is an award-winning journalist, who worked with the Los Angeles Times and its sister newspapers for 18 years. Lobdell covered the religion beat for The Times for eight years – first as a columnist and then as a beat reporter. He has earned several national awards for his work. He left the paper in 2008.

His memoir – “Losing My Religion: How I Lost My Faith Reporting on Religion in America – and Found Unexpected Peace” was published in February.

As part of his book promoting tour, Lobdell recently visited the Missouri School of Journalism where he talked about his life, his career and about people and their faith in America. On his blogs about his tour he says, “One of the advantages of going on a book tour is that you go to places you'd normally wouldn't find yourself.”

While in Columbia, Missouri, he talked to Global Journalist about the media's coverage of religion and what it takes to be a successful religion reporter in today's world.
