The Syrian: Just 22 years old, this Shia from rural Syria answered the sheikh of his mosque who was calling for jihad in Iraq. After convincing the sheikh that he was determined to fight jihad, the sheikh made the necessary arrangements for him to be taken across the border to Falluja last July where he was introduced to Abu Harb and taken under Iraqi command. Abu Harb trained this young man into an RPG specialist even thought he had no military training, but a fervent belief in Allah, martyrdom and jihad. “There is nothing more beautiful than martyrdom” said the Syrian repeatedly during our conversation.
Shortly after the U.S. invasion of Baghdad in 2003, journalists Steve Connors and Molly Bingham began work on their documentary film “Meeting Resistance”, an in-depth look at the Iraqi insurgency. Filmed over the course of ten months in 2003-2004, the film examines the diversity, motivations, and goals of the anonymous members of the resistance centered in the al-Adamiya neighborhood of Baghdad.
