Syrian blogger and press freedom campaigner detained by authorities

A Syrian blogger and press freedom advocate was detained by authorities Dec. 4 when she was traveling to Jordan to attend a press freedom conference, according to the report from Reuters.

Razan Ghazzawi, 30, is a blogger who took great efforts in documenting the detention and oppression of bloggers and writers in Syria during this year’s uprisings. She also works for the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM), according the Committee to Protect Journalists.

According to the Reuters article, Ghazzawi's last posting reported the release of fellow blogger Hussein Ghreir, who gained freedom after 37 days in jail. The article also mentioned a lack of comment from the Syrian authorities, who prohibited most independent journalists in the country and accuse bloggers of spreading lies about the uprising.

Syria has detained numerous journalists since the uprising, and has passed a new media law in August, claiming to forbid the arrest of journalists and defend free expressions, according to CPJ article.
