Exiled Rwanda online journalist killed in UgandaPosted Dec 8 2011
A Rwandan journalist who criticized the Rwandan President and lived in Uganda as political refugee was shot dead at a bar in Kampala, Uganda’s capital last Thursday, according the report from Reuters.
Charles Ingabire, online editor of the news website Inyenyeri, was shot twice in the chest by unknown assailants and died at the scene, according to an article from the Committee to Protect Journalists.
The Reuters report shows that the police had not established a motive for the shooting of Ingabire, but police had arrested a guard and a barmaid, who are now helping with investigations.
The article from the Committee to Protect Journalists said that Ingabire was an outspoken critic of the Rwandan government and left Rwanda to begin working as a reporter in Uganda. Ingabire joined Inyenyeri last year and was attacked by unknown assailants two months ago in Kampala. According to Reuters, he had been given refugee status in Uganda for political reasons.
CPJ research shows that journalists critical of the government are not welcomed in Rwanda. Six journalists fled the country fearing arrest, and two journalists are facing longtime prison sentences for charges including “insulting” the president.
