Committee says Southeast European journalists working in “environment of fear”

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the European group of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), stressed a lack of trade unions rights and press freedom in South East Europe at a regional round-table in Skopje, Macedonia. The meeting gathered representatives of trade unions of journalists notably from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Serbia, according to an Oct. 21 International Federation of Journalists article.

“Journalists in South East Europe are still working in an environment of fear,” EFJ President Arne König said in an Oct. 24 International Federation of Journalists article. Journalists work in very dangerous conditions as these countries are spoiled by political bias and corruption. “Political and commercial interests seem to join forces to pursue their own agenda regardless of professional standards in journalism,” said Arne König in the IFJ article. The creation of a regional network of unions to put an end
to this situation has been discussed, the article said.
