Journalists protest firing of editor

Journalists have gone on strike at the Kyiv Post after their chief editor was fired according to Radio Free Europe. They announced the strike on their Facebook page and said the decision by the paper’s owner Mohammed Zahoor to fire chief editor Brian Bonner compromises the paper’s independence. Zahoor bought the paper in 2008 and has business ties to the mining region of the Ukraine.

The journalists allege that Bonner was fired because he refused a request from Zahoor to withdraw an interview with the Ukrainian agriculture minister.

They will continue to write and edit stories for the paper’s online presence but will no longer contribute to the print product.
