Yemeni journalist killed

Jamal Al-Sharaabi, a photographer for the daily paper Al-Masdar, was killed on March 19 when security forces opened fire on a demonstration in Change Square, killing at least 30 people, Reporters Without Borders said.

Sharaabi was the father of four children, and “is the fourth journalist to be killed in the course of the wave of protests that have been rocking the Arab world since last December,” according to Reporters Without Borders.

Other harassed journalists, according to Reporters Without Borders, include:

  • Al Jazeera’s Hamdi Al-Bakari, who was picked up by pro-government thugs on March 17;
  • Bushra Al-Maqtari, who was injured when security agents dispersed a sit-in in Freedom Square, Taiz, on March 17;
  • Mareb Press reporter Mohammed Al-Hozayfi, who was injured when anti-riot police used stones and tear gas against protesters on March 17;
  • UAE weekly Al-Shorouq’s Adel Abdel Mughin was attacked by government supporters in Sanaa on March 16;
  • Bassem Al-Janabi of Al-Masdar Online news website lost consciousness when caught between government security agents and demonstrators using knives and tear gas on March 16.

The Committee to Protect Journalists also reported that “authorities expelled two Al Jazeera correspondents, continuing a pattern of ousting international reporters.” According to CPJ, the government did not notify Al Jazeera’s Sanaa bureau chief or provide justification for the expulsion.
