Journalists condemn police abuse against reporters

After Puerto Rican journalists were promised by Puerto Rican police Chief Jose Figueroa Sancha freedom in covering the protests of students against university fee hikes, Puerto Rican authorities have detained one journalist and harassed others, according to Solvision TV.

Ricardo Olivera Lora, the director of the student radio station “Radio Huelga” was detained after covering protests last week, said the president of the Puerto Rican Journalists Association, Rafael Lenin Lopez.

Lopez said that journalists have been under the harassment of police for covering the ongoing protests of the hike on university taxes.

The president of the Latin American Federation of Journalists (FELAP), Juan Carlos Camaņo, has expressed support for Puerto Rican journalists by saying in a letter on the website, the association expresses its solidarity with Lopez as well. Camaņo also writes in the letter that the association condemns the detainment of Lora.
