Entire newspaper staff resignsPosted Jan 26 2011
On Jan. 18, the entire staff of Dushanbe’s Russian-language weekly newspaper, Vecherny Dushanbe, resigned.
The journalists issued a collective statement of resignation blaming censorship, harassment, and disregard of the country’s labor laws by the paper’s owner, Akbar Sattor, head of the Charki Media Group.
Sattor, who is also the head of Tajikistan’s Union of Journalists, told Radio Free Europe that he denies these allegations and is planning on publishing the paper as usual, despite the resignations.
