President Hu's U.S. visit censored in China

In the Chinese media’s coverage of their nation’s president Hu Jintao’s visit to the United States, details of the two presidents’ human-rights discussions were significantly omitted, according to The Washington Post.

At a joint press conference held on Jan. 19, President Hu answered a twice-repeated question on human rights. Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency, did not carry his statement, “a lot still needs to be done,” the Post said. When a BBC clip of the conference was being aired in China, the same sentence was not broadcast.

Some websites like QQ.com, Sina.com and 163.com did carry the comment, and the full video was only shown on a Hong-Kong TV station’s website, the Post says.

According to an Agence France-Presse report, China Central Television (CCTV) and the state-controlled media otherwise covered Hu’s visit in detail. The welcoming ceremony and state dinner were reported in-depth, as well as areas of agreement between the two leaders.
