Government pledges to investigate murdered journalistsPosted Nov 17 2010
Honduran officials have thrown their support behind various new freedom of expression commitments after facing pressure from the International Freedom of Expression Exchange and an evaluation by the United Nations Human Rights Council. In addition to increasing access to information to meet international standards, the Honduran government has committed to investigating the murders of nine journalists who were killed in 2009, all of which remain unsolved.
Since a coup in June 2009, there have been a slew of press freedom and human rights violations, resulting in a sharp drop in Honduras’ press freedom ranking. However, after listening to the recommendations of IFEX and the U.N., it appears Honduran officials want to make an effort to fix some of the problems.
“This has been an amazing experience and we could not have asked for a better outcome. Hopefully the recommendations will be implemented and result in substantive changes,” Andrés Morales, executive director of the Fundación para la Libertad de Prensa, told IFEX.
