Brazilian radio host shot dead outside his home

Reporters Without Borders reports that a gunman on a motorcycle shot and killed the politically active journalist and radio host Francisco Gomes de Medeiros, five times outside his home on Oct. 18.

João Francisco Santos, one of the two shooters, was apprehended and admitted to shooting Gomes. Police are skeptical of his motive and believe the shooting may have been related to Gomes’ recent reporting on organized crime in the area.

Gomes was the news director and a reporter for Radio Caicó, where he has published stories dealing with government corruption and drug trafficking. His family has been quoted as saying they believe his death was directly related to his reporting on those topics.

Gomes left behind a wife and three children. An estimated 30,000 people attended his funeral.
