French-Vietnamese blogger chargedPosted Oct 13 2010
On Sept. 29, the Vietnamese government announced they are charging blogger Pham Minh Hoang with “activities aimed at overthrowing the government” and “membership of a terrorist organization,” according to Reporters Without Borders.
Hoang, a university math lecturer, has been illegally detained since Aug. 13.
His wife, Le Thi Kieu Oanh, wrote in an open letter that this is because of his involvement in a campaign against Chinese mining of bauxite in Vietnam’s central highlands.
This subject is banned in Vietnam and the government has arrested and sentenced journalists and activists that try to cover it in the past.
