State officials pledge to investigate 19 journalist murders

The Committee to Protect Journalists presented the cases of 19 murdered journalists to the Russian government last Thursday.

Today, top Russian investigators of the Investigative Committee for serious crimes have made a pledge to pursue these cases, some of them closed for many years. CPJ members said they feel encouraged by the apparent determination of the Russian investigators in prosecuting these cases, but they remain cautious, saying they will not be satisfied until there are convictions.

Russia ranks 8th of all countries on the CPJ’s Impunity Index, which identifies countries whose governments fail to solve violent crimes involving journalists. In the past 10 years, 19 journalists have been murdered.
