First Greek journalist killed in two decadesPosted Jul 20 2010
On July 19, Sokratis Giolias, director of a Greek radio station, was killed near his home. Giolias is the first journalist in Greece to be killed in the last two decades.
The South East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO) reports that an unidentified man rang the doorbell at Giolias’s home and told him his car was being stolen. Giolias went to his car and was then shot several times. He died on the scene. Three suspects fled the scene and are still unidentified.
Golias is the director of the radio station Thema 98.9 FM and the administrator of Troktiko, a popular social and political Greek blog. No motive has been suggested yet. Panos Sobolos, president of the Athens journalists’ union, told Reuters, “Somebody wanted to silence a very good investigative reporter who had stepped on a lot of toes with his stories.”
