Three Journalists killed in one weekend in NigeriaPosted May 3 2010
Edo Sule Ugbagwu, 42, court reporter for the private daily The Nation, was gunned down and killed at his home on April 24. According to his brother, Ubabgwu was reportedly shot by two armed gunmen in a Lagos suburb. The gunmen reportedly did not take anything. According to CPJ, Lagos State Police said it’s too early to determine whether the murder was an assassination or an attempted robbery that turned violent. The deputy editor of The Nation, Lawal Ogienagbon, said Ugbagwu hadn’t been working on any stories that he knew of that could have made him a target.
Nathan S. Dabak, 36, and Sunday Gyang Bwede, 39, were both killed in the city of Jos on the same day. They died in what was thought to be an instance of sectarian violence going on at the time, according to CPJ. Dabak was Deputy Editor of The Light Bearer, and Bwede was a reporter. Both men were stabbed by rioters on Saturday. They were covering the violence between Christians and Muslims going on in the area over the weekend.
