Grenades thrown at television stations

Unknown assailants attacked two Bangkok-based television stations with grenades March 27.

Both news outlets are owned by the state, with Channel 5 being run by the army and the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT) being run by the prime minister's office.

According to CPJ, attackers on motorcycles threw a grenade at Channel 5's offices at 7 p.m., causing serious injuries to two soldiers and two civilians and injuring three other civilians.

NBT reported a grenade attack, which injured a security worker, at 9:40 p.m.

There are currently no suspects or arrests made for either attack.

These attacks on media outlets come at a time of increased political protest, reports CPJ. The United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, affiliated with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has demanded the current prime minister call for new elections.

Thaksin was removed from office in 2006 due to a military coup.
