Journalist wins UN Press Freedom PrizePosted Apr 26 2010
An investigative journalist from Chile has won a UNESCO prize that honors those who risk their lives for freedom of expression.
Mónica González Mujica, whose reporting consistently challenged the Pinochet regime, is the laureate of the 2010 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, the Knight Center for Journalism reports.
González reported on the human rights abuses and financial issues of General Augusto Pinochet’s regime. After returning from four years in exile, she was harassed, imprisoned and repeatedly sued, but she continued to write. In 2007, she co-founded Chile’s Center for Investigative Journalism and is currently the director.
She will receive her award May 3 at the ceremony in Brisbane, Australia.
