Journalist arrested without explanationPosted Apr 26 2010
Burmese authorities arrested journalist Maung Zeya and his son during last week’s water festival near Rangoon. The arrest could have occurred for taking photos of bomb explosions that occurred at the event.
“The father-son duo was taken away from their home in the evening of the Burmese New Year,” a family member, who wished not to be named, said to Mizzima, a Web site dedicated to news in Burma. “The team was made up of local authorities, and the Police Special Branch took them in for questioning. They did not say why they were detained.”
According to Reporters Without Borders, Zeya was targeted because he is a former political prisoner.
The Burmese government said exiled opposition groups executed the bombings, which killed eight people and injured 170.
