Picture shows judge pointing gun at journalist

The Feb. 18 cover of Caretas, a newsweekly magazine in Perú, showed a local judge pointing a gun at a photojournalist. The same photojournalist the judge threatened took the cover shot.

The journalist, Carlos Saavedra, was taking pictures on Feb. 13 for a story about a controversial decision by Judge Raúl Rosales. Caretas reports that the judge was leaving in his car when he asked Saavedra to approach. The judge pointed the gun at Saavedra and warned him to be careful.

Rosales told the daily El Comercio he thought the reporter was a thief. In another interview with the Web site RPP, the judge said Saavedra was not wearing press credentials and therefore he was confused when the journalist pulled out a camera.

The local press said neither Saavedra nor Rosales would face charges.
