Several journalists kidnappedPosted Mar 19 2010
In a two-week span at the end of February and the beginning of March, at least eight Mexican journalists were kidnapped in the Reynosa area near Mexico’s border with Texas.
According to The Dallas Morning News, one died after a severe beating, two were released and the rest are still missing. The five missing journalists include a reporter from El Mañana, a freelance photographer from La Tarde, two journalists from an online news service and a TV cameraman.
The kidnapped journalists are part of a hostile dispute between the Gulf drug cartel and the Zetas, who formerly enforced security in the area. Because of the growing violence between the two groups, journalists in the area are forced to censor themselves when reporting, The Dallas Morning News reports.
