Gunmen kidnap radio journalist from homePosted Feb 26 2010
Four unidentified gunmen kidnapped radio journalist Hussam Daoud al-Eqabi, 22, as he left his home in Kirkuk on his way to work Feb. 17.
Al-Eqabi works for Al-Ahed, a radio station controlled by Shiite cleric Moktada al-Sadr. The abductors’ motivations are unclear to Iraqi police and head of Al-Ahed, Abed Abu Zahra.
Abu Zahra said eyewitnesses saw the kidnappers put al-Eqabi in the trunk of a red car, Committee to Protect Journalists reported.
“We are alarmed by the abduction of Hussam Daoud al-Eqabi and fear for his safety,” CPJ Deputy Director Robert Mahoney said.
Iraq is considered the most dangerous place to be a journalist in the past decade according to the International Press Institute’s World Press Review in 2009. They discovered 170 deaths and even more abductions of Iraqi journalists during the last ten years.
