Web causes trouble for 90-year-old magazine

One of Canada’s oldest magazines, The Beaver, was forced to change its name because the phrase now has a derogatory second meaning.

In a New York Times article, Deborah Morrison, the president and chief executive of the history society, said the nonprofit historical magazine didn’t have problems until the Internet boomed and Web filters expanded. Now, the word “Beaver” is blocked in schools and homes, making it difficult for their potential readers to gain access. The magazine also found it difficult to e-mail teachers with helpful class information because junk mail filters would prevent delivery.

The last issue with the original title was sent during the week of Jan. 25. The magazine now has changed its name to Canada’s History.
