Murdoch: Search engines must pay for newsPosted Oct 19 2009
Speaking at the World Media Summit, U.S. media mogul Rupert Murdoch said Internet search services must start paying for news content.
“The aggregators and plagiarists will soon have to pay a price for the co-opting of our content,” he said.
According to Sky News, Murdoch said sites such as Google and Yahoo, which take content from a range of sources, would soon be charged for the service.
Associate Press Executive Chief Tom Curley spoke in agreement with Murdoch. “We will no longer tolerate the disconnect between people who devote themselves – at great human and economic cost – to gathering news of public interest and those who profit from it without supporting it.”
According to Curley, Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook have replaced traditional news publishers, as consumers’ first destination for breaking news.
The World Media Summit was held to develop responses to challenges created by changing technology and the Internet.
