Blogger released from prisonPosted Sep 27 2009
Vietnamese blogger Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh was released from prison Sept. 12 after being held for ten days. She was arrested for criticizing the Vietnamese government’s handling of land and sea disputes with China on her blog.
Quynh, 30, was accused of “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interest of the state,” which is in Vietnam’s Penal Code. The issue she discussed is a popular topic in Vietnamese blogs, the Viet Tan reported.
Furthermore, Quynh was photographed wearing a shirt that read: “No Bauxite. Paracel and Spratly Islands belong to Vietnam.” She told Radio Free Asia that police questioned her about the photograph in late July 2009.
Police told Quynh she could no longer write for her blog. Two other bloggers, Bui Thanh Hieu and Pham Doan Trang, were also arrested but released Sept. 5.
“I came to blogging as an adventure in the world of information,” Quynh wrote on her Web site, “but every game comes to an end.”
