In Tehran on Aug. 25, 20 people, including journalists, faced charges of lying and spreading rumors of fraud about the controversial June 12 presidential election, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Among the defendants were several journalists from reformist news organizations: Massoud Bastani of Web site Jomhoriyat, the editor-in-chief of Itmad e Milli, Muhammad Ghouchani, Saeed Lilaz of business journal Sarmaia, and Ahmad Zaid-Abadi of Web site Rooz Online.
This was the fourth session of a mass trial of more than 100 people. CPj also reports that Iranian authorities have limited the reporting abilities of foreign journalists as well as arrested several journalists following the June 12 election.
Iran is the world’s leader in imprisoning journalists, according to CPJ.
