Freelancer released after pardon

Freelance journalist Jama Ayanle Feyte was released from prison April 15 after being granted pardon by the president of Puntland, Abdirahman Mohamud Farole. Puntland is a semi-autonomous region in Somalia’s northeast. Reporters Without Borders and its partner organization in Somalia, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) hailed Feyte’s release.

Feyte was sentenced to two years in prison for writing defamatory articles about the government by a court in Bossaso, the main city in Puntland on March 30.

RSF said, “This case confirms the urgent need for the Puntland authorities to adopt a law promoting press freedom, since journalists are too often victims of unfair arrest.”
