Cairo news company appeals complaintPosted May 4 2009
A court in Egypt is set to hear the appeal in a case against Cairo News Company (CNC) on April 19, reported Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
Cairo News Company provides equipment and services to foreign news media based in Egypt. A year ago, equipment was seized from CNC after Al Jazeera broadcast footage of demonstrators tearing up posters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, according to RSF.
State-run Egyptian Radio and Television Union issued a complaint against CNC, accusing the company of “operating an unlicensed broadcast network and broadcasting without a permit,” according to RSF. Head of CNC Nader Gohar faces a possible five-year prison sentence.
Reporters Without Borders has written to Ahmed Anis of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union, asking him to withdraw the complaint against CNC.
