Ambassador denies press freedom crisisPosted Apr 15 2009
Sri Lanka's ambassador to the United States, Jaliya Wickramasuriya, has said that there is no crisis of press freedom in Sri Lanka and that the image of Sri Lanka has been distorted, Tamil Net reported March 14.
He said this during a meeting with officials from the Committee to Protect Journalists in response to CPJ's accusation ‘that there has been impunity for those who attack journalists in Sri Lanka, and there have been attempts to intimidate and silence critics of the government’
The Sri Lankan ambassador asserted that the image of his country as a violent place where journalists are threatened was not accurate. He also hinted at terrorists’ involvement in the recent killing of journalists in Sri Lanka to humiliate the government.
