U.N. calls for greater safetyPosted Apr 15 2009
The United Nations has shown concern over the safety of journalists carrying out their duties in Iraq. According to UPI, a top U.N. official called for safety of Iraqi journalists after two journalists were killed in a suicide attack.
UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura said March 16 that such indiscriminate killings were contrary to every law:
“I must, once again, urge the authorities to improve the safety of journalists, a profession of brave women and men whose work is important for society as a whole as it seeks to restore democracy and rule of law. The toll paid by the profession in Iraq is shocking.”
The UNESCO leader informed that the two journalists killed in the March 10 attack were Haider Hashim, a correspondent for broadcaster al-Baghdadia, and cameraman Suhaib Adnan, while Iraqia TV reporter Ibrahim al-Katib was severely injured.
Since April 2003, 295 Iraqi journalists have been killed in the country.
