Charge against editor droppedPosted Apr 21 2009
A court in The Gambia has dismissed charges of publishing false information against Pap Saine, editor of The Point, reported the International Press Institute. IPI has called the decision a “positive step in reversing government efforts to intimidate the co-founder of a leading independent newspaper,” according to the institute’s Web site.
Saine will still face separate proceedings for accusations of falsifying citizen documents. This is despite testimony from a government witness that Saine’s proof of Gambian citizenship is authentic, reported IPI. Saine also serves a long-time correspondent for Reuters, according the IPI report.
