Egyptian blogger Dia’Eddin Gad was freed from prison March 27 after an arrest in early February, according to Reporters Without Borders. Gad was arrested because of views he had expressed on his blog.
“Free expression is in the process of disappearing in Egypt,” RSF said on its Web site. “Dia’Eddin Gad is an ordinary student who posted his views on a range of subjects online. His arrest was illegal and we condemn the treatment he received while detained. We call on the authorities to explain the precise reasons for his abduction by the security forces.”
Gad was taken from his home by Egyptian police and was subject to prison interrogation sessions during which he was accused of insulting President Hosni Mubarak, according to RSF. Gad was also put in solitary confinement and deprived of light during his prison term.
