Fourth Novaya Gazeta reporter killed

After leaving a press conference in Moscow on Jan. 19, journalist Anastasia Baburova, 25, was shot and killed by a masked gunman. It is believed that the gunman’s primary target was human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov, but that Baburova, who was walking alongside him, was shot immediately after. Investigators are still determining if Baburova was shot intentionally or while trying to stop the attacker.

Baburova was a freelance reporter for Novaya Gazeta, and is the fourth reporter from the newspaper to be murdered since 2000. Rights activists have compared her death to the killing of Anna Politkovskaya, a Novaya Gazeta investigative reporter who was found fatally shot in her apartment building’s elevator in 2006.
